The village has a population of around 150.
There was once a busy port on the River Urr, but this is largely silted up and not much used.
Palnackie used to host the Grande Internationale World Flounder Tramping Championships in late July or early August every year. Nearby is Orchardton Tower, the only round tower house in Scotland.
